work.Happy®

When we were young we all heard the clich├ęd question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” At the time, the answer may have seemed obvious: a doctor, businesswoman, or maybe even an astronaut. But as graduation approaches, the search for that one “Dream Job” seems less set in stone. Among recent graduates, 41 percent are unemployed and over half are working a job outside of their field of study. It seems as though the “Dream Job” is more unattainable than ever. However, there is hope for everyone: the “Dream Job” isn’t simply what you do at work. Happiness at work depends just as heavily on the environment you work in as the job title you have. Many graduates focus so heavily on that “Dream Job” that they ignore how they would work best.

work.Happy® is a philosophy that focuses on interpersonal relationships at work that allow anyone to have a “Dream Job.” Happiness at work mostly depends on how you interact with those around you. We spend the majority of our lives at work, and yet many complain that work makes them miserable. Through the work.Happy® philosophy, employees can learn how to change this. work.Happy® utilizes seven principles—Respect, Support, Recognition, Dreams, Creativity, Balance and Growth—to foster a positive work environment. These values guide everyone's behavior in the workplace, from the executive manager to the intern. They act to ensure that employees treat each other with respect and help each other to grow as an employee, achieve their personal goals, and in turn help the organization grow. Being happy in a work environment can vastly affect how you feel about your job.

It may seem difficult to imagine changing the attitudes and ideas people have toward each other in the workplace, especially as an entry-level employee. As you graduate, however, it's important to keep in mind that your own behavior in the workplace will set the tone for others. A work.Happy® workplace is not created by a manager alone, it depends on everybody's attitude, including your own. We've all heard the Golden Rule: “Treat people the way you want to be treated.” But it's more important to follow The Platinum Rule: “Treat people the way they want to be treated.” When you enter the workplace, be attentive to your fellow employees. Get to know their interests, skills and personal goals. Ask them how they work best, and respect their needs and differences. Help them to learn skills that you specialize in and they'll help you in return. It takes an individual commitment from everyone to create a happy workplace, and fostering these relationships is the key to enjoying work. work.Happy® allows everyone to have a “Dream Job” no matter what they do.

To learn more about the work.Happy® philosophy, visit www.workhappy.org and read “It Takes Work to be Happy,” by Anderson School of Management graduate Terri Giron-Gordon.

Celine Gordon is a graphic designer at GenQuest, Inc. and an Art History and Architecture student at Barnard College in New York City. It Takes Work to be Happy was her first book design.

Placing Your Name In a Hat

Have you ever heard someone say, they wish they had an opportunity that someone else just received? Are you a victim of saying this yourself? I know when I was younger I definitely said this a few times.

When I hear this phrase now or something of a similar nature I think back to a presentation given to me this previous summer during my internship with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The man giving the presentation was the Director of Education at the FDIC, and has had a very long and fulfilling career. The gentleman spoke about opportunities, and how there are several opportunities in the world, but people don’t take the chance to seize them.

He than spoke about why he thought people didn’t take more chances when it came to possible opportunities. He asked the members in the audience to think about why people shy off from these opportunities. Many of the same examples came up: Why should I try? There are so many people I don’t have a chance, I’m not qualified for this, I don’t have time to be rejected, and several more. Every example had something in common. They all had something to do with not trying.

At this point our speaker asked us to think about this simple fact. It is never possible for your name to be chosen out of a hat if it is not there in the first place. With life there will come many opportunities; however, you will never have a chance to receive them unless you place your name in the hat. The more hats you place your name in, the better chance you have at being picked. Yes there is chance at not getting your name pulled. As a matter of fact, there will be several times that your name is not pulled. In the end you can say at least you tried, and you won’t have to go on with the thought of -- what if?  You must remember the worst thing you will ever hear is no.  When the time does come that your name is pulled, you will know it was all worth putting the effort.

This message really made a big impact on me as I thought back to the times that I did put my name in the hat. When I was freshman, I remember applying for over 30 different student positions at UNM. Now I know what you’re thinking, that is a lot of hats. You know what though; it ended up landing me a position with Residence Life and Student Housing where I ended up working in four different positions, over the last four years. When a friend called to ask if I wanted to run in an election for a student government position, I took the opportunity. Even though I lost the first go-around, I tried again and came back to win, and was able to serve the student body for a year. This past spring I went to every career fair, meet many employers, and applied for several internships. I eventually was offered an opportunity with the FDIC and now have a full time offer after I graduate.

Understanding the importance of putting my name in a hat has definitely made an impact on my life and I recommend it to everyone.  The next time you find yourself asking why you don’t get opportunities, remind yourself to take a chance and place your name in the hat, because it could just be the time that it gets pulled.

Lobo to Lobo Connection

Welcome to UNM Anderson School of Management!  Fall is always an exciting time on campus, with all the excitement of meeting or reconnecting with friends and professors that will inspire you with new experiences and opportunities.

This year, I have worked closely with Anderson’s Career Services to provide a unique program called “Lobo to Lobo Connection” designed to strengthen the bond between the students at Anderson and its alumni base of over 17,000 Lobos!  I have been working hard to create programs which match the interests and needs of students and alumni; to maintain and build upon the positive relationships we have with our more seasoned alumni; to increase the participation, involvement, and communication with our younger alumni; and to continue to serve as the primary communications link between the University and its alumni.  In doing so, there are exciting opportunities to get students involved.  If you are looking for ways to network and connect with the business community and our alumni base, volunteer!  We are always looking for volunteers at upcoming events such as A Taste of Anderson (September 12)—a culinary event supporting the Rick & Debbie Johnson Marketing Center; Anderson’s Homecoming featuring the Interdisciplinary Film & Digital Media program at Mesa Del Sol (September 26); Have some fun while supporting our Lobo Football Team at the UNM Anderson Homecoming Tailgate (September 28) and our annual Hall of Fame event (March 13) which brings in over 650 of the who’s who in the business community to honor our top alumni.

Mentorship is a very large part of connecting Lobos together.  We have established an on-line Mentorship program for students looking for a professional mentor to provide career advice and insight; resources to connect alumni and students in various career fields; and inspire relationship building through mentoring.  Anderson students can now search for Anderson alumni and/or business mentors to learn firsthand about their field of interest and gain insight regarding their personal growth and career path—in addition to getting help reviewing resumes, cover letters, informational interviews and job-shadowing opportunities.  Currently we have over 100 Anderson alumni signed up to help our students.  It’s easy to register, just go to www.mgt.unm.edu/mentor or contact me at abqricci@unm.edu to get more information.

Lastly, I want to leave you with UNM’s Lobo Pledge, building pride and tradition in our great institution!

Lead with courage and integrity

Open my mind to the diversity of people and ideas that surround me

Be engaged in my community, making a difference in the lives of others

Own my future, through the pursuit of academic and personal excellence

There is a great team at Anderson on board ready to help you succeed.  Take advantage of the resources available to you.  Together, we can make this a great year!  Go Lobos!

Sincerely,
Roberta Ricci
Sr. Alumni Relations Officer

Roberta Ricci is an alum of the Anderson School with a BBA in Organizational Leadership. In addition, she holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the UNM College of Education.  She comes to Anderson from the UNM Alumni Association where she has served for six years as the Unit Administrator and a key liaison between the Association and the Alumni board of directors along with a host of University-wide responsibilities.
